What Is a Design Concept? Design Concept Definition & FAQ

concept of design

One of the biggest challenges many architecture students have is grasping what an architecture design concept is, and what makes a great architecture design concept. Among her interests are artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. As a humanitarian and educator, she actively supports women in tech and promotes diversity.

What are the seven principles of design?

concept of design

Design is the root of all creativity, so take the time to really craft your designs. The use of similar elements enhances a design’s perception of harmony. Repetitive patterns and forms create compositions without a defining focal point. Backgrounds and shadows can also benefit from slight modifications. Objects that are designed must tell a story and evoke a certain feeling or emotion that the designer wants a viewer to experience.

Conceptual design: Definition, step-by-step breakdown

It starts by exploring the brand personality to ensure the chosen concept aligns with the brand image and is viable for the brand mission. Additionally, it is crucial to analyze the target audience’s needs and preferences, as well as exploring the competition and industry conventions. At Ester, we create mood boards that help us stay focused and inspired during the research phase. It combines intangible, theoretical, and visual representations of an idea, while keeping the end goal in mind throughout the design process.

Good design makes a product understandable.

Gestalt refers to our tendency to perceive the sum of all parts as opposed to the individual elements. The human eye and brain perceive a unified shape in a different way to the way they perceive the individual parts of such shapes. In particular, we tend to perceive the overall shape of an object first, before perceiving the details (lines, textures, etc.) of the object. Unity has to do with creating a sense of harmony between all elements in a page. A page with elements that are visually or conceptually arranged together will likely create a sense of unity. We use colours in visual design to convey emotions in and add variety and interest to our designs, separate distinct areas of a page, and differentiate our work from the competition.

Why is it better to avoid working on the concept and production-ready design simultaneously?

The word "users" removes their importance and treats them more like objects than people. By replacing “user” with “human,” designers can empathize better with the people for whom they are designing. Don Norman takes HCD a step further and prefers the term People-Centered Design. For example, teams may jump from the test stage to the define stage if the tests reveal insights that redefine the problem. Or, a prototype might spark a new idea, prompting the team to step back into the ideate stage.

It user-centered, i.e. users are at the heart of the design thinking approach. It is about creating solutions for people, physical items or more abstract systems to address a need or a problem. Users come to specific websites or products to solve particular problems, and designers must ensure their solutions are tailored to those needs. This requires a deep understanding of user behaviour, preferences, and pain points. By focusing on meeting the demands of their users, designers can create practical and impactful products. In addition to understanding graphic design theory, knowing user experience is essential.

A design concept establishes the foundation of the product design with proper design guidelines in statement form. The conceptual design process constitutes a pivotal juncture within the product design and development trajectory. For UX and UI designers, the conceptual model serves as the maiden step in articulating the system’s intended functionalities to users. Generally speaking, it is the process of envisioning and planning the creation of objects, interactive systems, buildings, vehicles, etc.

Create your concept

The more you practice this principle of design, the higher the chance your brand will grow beyond just a single advertisement. If you have a light blue background image, write your copy in a darker font, most preferably on a patch over a part of the image so that it can be seen. Designs with poor contrast have elements that can be easily missed. Whether creating a social media post to inform customers about a new feature or developing a lengthy email communication strategy, you need to have your priorities in place. With Wix’s intuitive technology and powerful built-in features for website design, you’ll have the creative freedom to make a website you love. Angela Suthrave talks about the importance of understanding the assumptions, foundations, and boundaries behind a strategy.

Relationship with the arts

However, most lists of design principles include around 7 to 12 key elements. Think of design as carpentry and these principles as your toolbox. You can use them to help you during the design process, and unlike hammers, nails, and screwdrivers, they can exist entirely inside your head. Like brainstorming (or verbal ideation) the goal is to come up with sketches fast so that your ideas can flow freely. You don’t want to get hung up on your first sketch or spend too much time on minute detail. Right now, you are simply visualizing possible interpretations of the concept.

Unity in design principles refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements that ensures all parts of a composition work together harmoniously. It's achieved when each element appears to be an integral part of the overall design, resulting in a complete and aesthetically pleasing piece. Franks Spillers’ design checklist is an example of customized design principles for mobile user experience (UX) design.

This reduces the likelihood of significant issues arising and enables developers to fix minor problems that may occur along the way, ensuring that the project continues without delay. The impression your audience derives from your design directly results from how you've skillfully integrated these elements into a cohesive and engaging composition. Consequently, it's essential to tailor your strategy to resonate effectively with your target audience, ensuring the message is relevant and impactful.

Whether designing for the web or print, designers must consider the problems and tasks of their target users. This involves researching to gain insights into their behaviours, needs, and preferences. By doing so, designers can create products that meet the demands of their users while also being functional, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly. Here, we have prepared the basic design principles for a web or graphic designer and developer, which can help create high-quality design products. By learning to blend and balance these elements, you can create compositions that elicit a robust emotional response and resonate with your audience. Continually experimenting with and breaking down the principles of white space will empower you to refine your design skills, ultimately leading to more compelling and impactful work.

Try to avoid doing so with words — it tends to just give folks headaches. Despite the occasional bright colors and wacky designs, the key to creating effective patterns is simplicity. Designers create rhythm by repeating lines, shapes, colors, and other elements. This makes a path for our eyes to follow, builds patterns, and imbues the design with a sense of flow. It also creates a sense of consistency by using a repeating motif that the viewer comes to expect. This makes it particularly useful when it comes to creating your distinct brand identity.

Conceptual design brings logic to the design process, ensuring that both aesthetics and practicality are considered. To simplify the use of products, developers can start by analysing user feedback to identify common pain points and challenges. This can help them identify improvement areas and prioritise these changes. Developers can also use design principles such as simplicity, consistency, and user-centeredness to create intuitive, user-friendly products.

By focusing on the holistic visual representation of an idea from development to execution, conceptual design serves several essential purposes. In the development process, responsible design is critical to creating effective solutions. One approach to responsible development is using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

LogRocket generates product insights that lead to meaningful action

The key mindsets that ensure a team can successfully implement design thinking are. On the surface, design thinking frameworks look very different—they use alternative names and have different numbers of steps. However, at a fundamental level, they share several common traits. In the book Designing Social Systems in a Changing World, Béla Heinrich Bánáthy, Professor at San Jose State University and UC Berkeley, created a “divergence-convergence model” diagram. The British Design Council interpreted this diagram to create the Double Diamond design process model. The Head, Heart, and Hand approach by AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) is a holistic perspective on design.

Stage 2: Research – Gathering Information and Context

It’s essential to articulate the need for preparatory work as the foundation for a solid structure. During this process ideas and concepts arise about what the experience of this structure could be. Research and pre-design are all about going deep and finding opportunities. If you cannot find a concept after considering all this information, you are not going deep enough in your research.

Test Your Prototypes: How to Gather Feedback and Maximize Learning

People who learn best by taking notes might have an easier time organizing their concepts by writing them down. And sometimes taking a more analytical approach (such as research) early on can constrain creativity whereas the opposite can also lead to creativity without a purpose. It is important to note that these steps don’t have to be completed in any particular order. For example, many designers jump to doodling without any concrete plan of what they are trying to achieve.

The Ultimate Guide to Understanding UX Roles and Which One You Should Go For

Furthermore, your design concept must consider the timeframe, budget, and technical needs for the project. Follow these certain criteria to make a successful conceptual design. However, we must remember that design concept or conceptual design helps create good UI/UX designs. In fact, technically great designs can also fail if they do not have a sturdy concept. Your product will solve a problem, and you should clarify how that works when presenting the design concept. Set up the problem, show why you need to solve it, and discuss how that will affect users.

Product Guides

Think about the stakeholders in your audience and how best to communicate your design concept in terms they understand. You may gather valuable user data by distributing questionnaires to gauge their experiences of existing products. When preparing to write a design concept, the first step is always defining the problem to be solved — which may be a solo or group task. These eyes can follow you as you approach the car, which is not creepy at all. The Light Cloud also refers to the "Light Screen," the area below the light bar, which houses an LED display in a "partially transparent" panel. At the back, the tail light bar is also equipped with 3D Eyes to interact with other road users.

All Solutions

concept of design

One of the main benefits of design concepts is that they allow you to test and validate ideas before you invest in a product’s development. In summary, conceptual design is a valuable tool that can guide designers through the complex workflow, leading them towards the intended goal. While creating a valuable concept may be challenging and exhausting, it will ultimately pay off in the end. In a market saturated with various designs, it is the meaning behind a product that truly makes it stand out.

This exploration phase will often lead to rejecting some ideas and deciding on which to lead with. The first step in creating a design concept is to organize your thoughts around the creative process. At this stage, it’s crucial to consider the app’s purpose, goals, business objective, and brand resonance.

Conceptual design has the root word “concept,” which describes the idea and intention behind the design. This is contrasted by “execution”, which is the implementation and shape that a design ultimately takes. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user. It enables us to understand, communicate and improve the world around us. When done right, design has the power to improve the everyday lives of users. As a designer, you have the power to improve the everyday lives of your users if you practice good design.

When a player hits a target, laser beams create hit marks and tally points on a specialized “target” vest. It is very important to define the problem your design is supposed to solve or the specific goals it wants to achieve. Concepts can be tough to master, especially when you’re starting. We analyse the programme and again start to find functional relationships and patterns. To help understand what a concept is, let’s consider what a concept is not. A concept is an abstract idea of what something is or how it works.

If the feedback is less than favorable, revisiting previous steps to devise improved solutions is par for the course. This iterative process is characteristic of the conceptual design journey, though it may necessitate several rounds of iteration. Mind mapping is a method for visually representing an idea in diagrammatic form. The central notion is positioned at the core, while related concepts are positioned on branching limbs, culminating in a tree-like structure. This technique catalyzes idea generation, concept organization, visualization, and a comprehension of relationships and data arrangement before delving into more intricate design phases. Conceptual design occurs at the beginning of the design process, often before small elements like color schemes or illustration styles are finalized.

The design sprint is a very structured version of design thinking that fits into the timeline of a sprint (a sprint is a short timeframe in which agile teams work to produce deliverables). Developed by Google Ventures, the design sprint seeks to fast-track innovation. A mindset is a characteristic mental attitude that determines how one interprets and responds to situations. Design thinking mindsets are how individuals think, feel and express themselves during design thinking activities.

Designers use principles such as visibility, findability and learnability to address basic human behaviors. One example of a design concept is using a minimalist approach, which is popular in technology design. This kind of design concept strives for simplicity and functionality, where forms are reduced to their essential elements to result in a clean aesthetic. Emphasizing user experience and functionality, the minimalist design should be easy-to-use and free from unnecessary details. A design concept is an early-stage idea that provides designers with in-depth and meaningful direction. Spending a good amount of time on the design concept reduces the risk of setbacks and enables everyone on the team to clearly understand the idea.

HCD is a formal discipline with a specific process used only by designers and usability engineers to design products. Design thinking borrows the design methods and applies them to problems in general. User experience expert Don Norman describes human-centered design (HCD) as a more evolved form of user-centered design (UCD).

Go over all the significant findings you have and write down your assumptions and hypotheses. One way to generate lots of ideas is by using the Crazy 8 concept. To do a crazy 8, ask all your team members to come up with eight ideas and put them with one idea per sticky. So, the quantity is more important than the quality at this point. Therefore, once you have all the views on the board, encourage the team members to write down more ideas if they want to build upon other’s concepts. As product designers, we spend lots of time in the 2D, 3D, and 4D designs but not much in the 0D and 1D.

The 10-passenger deck cruise ship has since undergone a "multi-million investment and refurbishment" to fit the Margaritaville brand. The entertainment lineup includes two new scripted live production shows, along with two theme nights, poolside activities and music. This package costs $25 and covers both days of the cruise, about 48 hours of coverage. Signal strength is sufficient for most of the cruise, however, it does take a while for things to load and send. Margaritaville At Sea offers three different drink packages to chose from onboard.

Guide to Margaritaville At Sea

Unlike most cruise lines, Margaritaville at Sea allows its passengers to get off the ship in the Bahamas and stay at an all-inclusive resort on Grand Bahama Island. You can choose from two or four days at the partner resorts, either the Viva Wyndham or Grand Lucayan. One way you can tell that Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is not a new ship is by its deck plan and layout. Some of the areas of the ship, such as the Port of Indecision buffet, show their age by being more cramped than what you'd expect on newer vessels. It was so hard to get a seat here that people resorted to carrying food all over the ship, leaving dirty dishes in lounges far away from the restaurant. We were surprised to learn on our 2022 sailing that the Margaritaville at Sea appeal goes far beyond Parrotheads, as Jimmy Buffett's fans are called.

This includes the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar, a staple for the brand and the perfect place to "waste away again." Margaritaville At Sea also offers some onboard packages for guests to enhance their cruise experience. These add-on packages give guests the option to add even more to their vacation. Note that these add-on packages are an additional cost in addition to the normal cost of the cruise. Margaritaville at Sea is an exciting new offshore resort experience.

If you choose this option, note that you'll have to have a passport, and not just a birth certificate. Which is good, because only 10 rooms on the entire ship come with a balcony. Even junior suites only have portholes; you have to book a Grand Terrace Suite if you want outdoor real estate. Another area where the ship seems dated is in its utilities; the renovation did not add the number of American outlets and USB ports that always-wired travelers want these days. Margaritaville at Sea Islander's only 4-night itinerary features an all-day venture at the tropical island oasis of Cozumel, plus two sun-soaked days at sea. For a limited time, enjoy complimentary Balcony stateroom upgrades for select dates on the all-new Margaritaville at Sea Islander through 2024.

The ship will also have four kids' club, including the Far Out Arcade and Lounge. The rooms on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise were all updated before the ship relaunched in 2022, with tropical décor and accents. Some of these venues are complimentary, others are specialty and come at an additional cost. There is also a fitness center onboard located within the spa area on Deck 11. The fitness center is also relatively small and consists of primarily cardio equipment such as treadmills. While on my sailing with Margaritaville I stopped by the spa to check it out.

Margaritaville At Sea has several sales on offer to prospective guests. For example, one of their most notable sales is the Heroes Sail Free promotion. This sale takes off the price of the cruise, and makes It so that guests who qualify as service members and first responders, only pay the port taxes, fees, fuel charge, and gratuities.

Once you're in the Bahamas, shore excursions are extra and you will have to pay to take transportation from the terminal in Freeport to any attractions, as there is nothing within walking distance. That being said, on a cruise this short, where you're in port for one of the two days, you're not spending much time in your room anyway. Part of the Jimmy Buffett/Margaritaville vibe is that anything goes, as long as you remain laid back.

Our cruise offers are an irresistible opportunity to get a great deal on your next Caribbean escape. “Margaritaville At Sea will be a new, exciting, and fun way for guests to escape and vacation in Margaritaville. From oceans to lakes, Margaritaville has an organic tie to the water and with Margaritaville At Sea, we’re able to put our iconic lifestyle, resort experiences, and elevated service directly on the sea.

Nearly 60% of the passengers on a typical Margaritaville at Sea sailing are taking their first cruise ever, we were told, and the vast majority of them have only a passing knowledge of Buffett. We noticed this particularly during the evening show, a jukebox musical of Buffett hits written by Jimmy himself. While some passengers enthusiastically sang along, fins up, other people smiled and tapped their toes, but clearly didn't know the words. Enhance your escape with our exclusive signature packages, designed to maximize your time aboard the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise at an exceptional value.

Margaritaville at Sea unveiled an array of entertainment offerings onboard its newest ship, the Islander, embarking on its maiden voyage from Port Tampa Bay in June, according to a company statement. Margaritaville At Sea has six lounges onboard, all offering tasty drinks and fun atmospheres for guests to enjoy with friends. Personalize your paradise with cruise add-ons, packages, and upgrades. Experience the ultimate getaway with priority boarding and luggage, premium dining, a $300 spa credit, 10 top shelf drinks, shore excursion credit, luxury stateroom touches, and much more. Setting sail in spring 2022, the Margaritaville Paradise will feature 10 passenger decks and 659 cabins with various stateroom categories. The ship’s casual-luxe cabins and common spaces will allow guests to drift away to paradise with subtle nautical details and colors influenced by the surrounding seas, sands, and skies.

Located on the upper floor of Fins Dining Room is the new Islander Dining Room serving chef-crafted seasonal specialties in addition to the main restaurant menu. The heart of the ship will be the 14-story Flip Flop Atrium, featuring a giant flip flop sculpture at the base, multi-story floating margarita glass chandeliers, a bar and a full-stage LED screen. The ship will also have a spa and fitness center, casino, live music enclaves, such as the Six String outdoor live music stage, two-story nightclub and four outdoor pool zones. (Many passengers here receive a meal here in the popular License to Chill package that comes with 10 drinks, an onboard wine tasting and other perks). The included Fins dining room reminded us of the main dining room on any cruise ship, with enough options to satisfy a variety of tastes.

She was able to make dining and spa reservations for me, escort me to priority seating in the theater for nightly shows and have crackers and green apples delivered to my cabin when the second night's rough seas made me feel seasick. I think that MSC's alternative, for-fee restaurants — including the ones on MSC Meraviglia — are some of the best. If you're willing to shell out the money, you can have a fantastic meal on this ship. Given that the vessel, MSC Meraviglia, is the fifth-largest in the line's fleet of two dozen ships in terms of tonnage and the sixth-largest by passenger capacity, the ship's presence in the Big Apple is a big deal.

Edge - Cocktail Bar

The longest two itineraries offered by the 5,179-guest ship will be 7-night voyages to the Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean. While MSC World America’s debut in the US is certainly something to look forward to, she won’t be the only vessel sailing in US waters throughout summer 2025. Indeed, MSC Seascape will also homeport in the cruise line’s state-of-the-art terminal in Miami, while MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore will be based in New York City and Port Canaveral, respectively.

For the connoisseur there is a handpicked selection of premium drinks available. "Really had a fabulous time. The ship, transfers, excursions, staff, food, drinks and entertainment were amazing."

Sports Bar

The Yacht Club sun deck was a lovely space, but it was often too hot for me, so I didn't spend much time up there. The area was home to a pool, a hot tub, tons of seating, solarium access and a daily outdoor buffet at the Yacht Club Grill. Although the food looked tasty, it was, unfortunately, often surrounded by flies. Likewise, also note that not all ocean view cabins are larger than the interior cabins.

Balcony (BP)

Catch the big game, enjoy quality entertainment, or relax with a cocktail at the convivial Sports Bar. Enjoy a selection of cold beer, cocktails, energy drinks, protein shakes or juices and complimentary hot dogs. The Meraviglia is currently the largest cruise ship built by a Europe-based cruise line.

Meraviglia was christened on June 3, 2017, in Le Havre (seaport to Paris) as in 2017 the port celebrated its 500 anniversary. Meraviglia then was deployed in Marseille for the inaugural cruise season in the Mediterranean. The itinerary announcement was made on February 1, 2016, at the coin-laying ceremony in St Nazaire (STX France shipyard), where the ship was under construction. The ceremony was attended by the vessel's 3 initial godmothers - Charlotte Bellanger (Port Le Havre), Marie Gabrielle Gossiaux (STX France) and Mariella Castellano (MSC Cruises).

Among the standouts is the Brash Anchor Pub, which feels like an authentic British pub and features a limited bar menu, including fish and chips. The four main dining rooms serve Mediterranean and international foods with a different menu each night. A standard nightly menu is consistent throughout the voyage, offering traditional dishes like steak, fish, and chicken. Meraviglia-class is MSC's first vessels with a museum - showcasing original art masterpieces from The Louvre (Paris, France). The original artworks are shown behind bullet-proof glass (like in all land galleries). MSC signed a special insurance policy, according to which in case of damages / lost the company would personally purchase these assets.

When the alarm activates (in a man overboard case), light and acoustic signals notify the ship’s security officer who can immediately review the recorded video and notify the Navigation Bridge crew to start a rescue operation. In early June 2020, MSC announced that in 2021 the Meraviglia ship will be homeported in PortMiami (Florida USA) for 7-night voyages departing on Saturdays. Meraviglia's Western Mediterranean program was based on 7-night roundtrips leaving from 4 different homeports (Marseille France, Barcelona Spain, and Italy's Genoa and Naples).

Speaking of the theater, no drinks are allowed in there, which is odd, given that all other cruise lines allow passengers to order drinks during shows or at least carry them in with them to enjoy while they watch. We saw several surprised cruisers being told they had to dump their beverages or drink them before they'd be allowed inside. When cruises first returned following the 18-month COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, many lines decided to go digital with their muster drills. Passengers watched videos on their mobile apps or on their cabin TVs before reporting, at their leisure (to maintain social distancing), to their muster stations for verification. MSC has chosen to institute a bizarre version where all passengers watch a video and then report to their muster stations at the same time. Of public space per guest, poolside space on MSC Meraviglia is some of the most plentiful to be found at sea.

The cabins feature a stylish decor that is modern and simplistic at the same time. They’re well-appointed with USB chargers, plugs, and plenty of storage space. Bathrooms are decent size with actual shower enclosures instead of the dreaded shower curtains. On May 31, 2017, the vessel was delivered to the shipowner MSC at STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. The ceremony was attended by MSC Cruises executives and dozens of dignitaries (including France's President Emmanuel Macron) and Zoe Africa Vago (daughter of Pierfrancesco Vago - MSC Cruises executive chairman). The delivery ceremony also included the signing of a new ship construction deal with STX France for a new series of mega cruise ships (World Class) at a total cost of EUR 4.5 billion.

MSC Meraviglia’s enhanced MSC Yacht Club will feature exclusive restaurants, a private lounge, private whirlpool baths and several spacious suites. Outside of these premium suites you’ll find a variety of staterooms such as duplex suites, balcony/oceanview/interior staterooms and MSC Cruises’ new family staterooms. From the two-story amusement park and outdoor water park to the indoor promenade lined with restaurants and shops, there’s something for everyone aboard the MSC Meraviglia.

"No, those are for children only," a crew member behind the counter told a parent who was trying to grab dessert for his son, who was outside by the pool. When MSC first announced that MSC Meraviglia would be sailing from New York, the ship's homeport was Manhattan. I groaned when I heard its docking spot had changed to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood. While most experiences on this sailing fell in the latter category, it wouldn't be a fair review without calling attention to the things that I think the line needs to address. Celebrity Cruises Review for April 2024 Best Cruise Lines

While suite guests gain exclusive access to The Retreat, anyone can relax in one of the swanky pool areas or the laid-back Lawn Club. Then, when hunger — or thirst — calls, passengers can take their pick of over 20 food and drink options. Although there are suite types that span the entire fleet, the line likes to create experiences that are exclusive to some of its newest classes and ships.

The two Celebrity Cruises ships on order will be the fourth and fifth ships in Celebrity's Edge-class series of vessels that began debuting in 2018. The first three ships in the series are Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond. It was unveiled in 2000, right at the turn of the millennium (hence its name).

It's also interesting to note that, in the ones that do have them, the balconies boast significantly more space than the interior living area does. For cruisers wanting the step up their square footage or storage space, a Celebrity Suite will do the trick. These are the smallest suites in the fleet, ranging from 251 to 362 square feet with balconies that range from 57 to 163 square feet. They're arranged in a studio configuration, similar to what you'd find in non-suite cruise-ship accommodations. They're the least expensive option for those who crave access to suite-level amenities. Unless otherwise noted, all cabins are designed for double occupancy.

Everything you need to know about Celebrity Cruises cabins and suites

We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. Even if you don’t consider yourself the adventurous type, you still might like a cruise on this ship. The all-suite vessel only houses 100 guests at double occupancy, so you’ll definitely enjoy a more intimate experience than you might otherwise — and all with a Celebrity Cruises touch of luxury. The vessel offers Craft Social, pub-style dining concept that originally premiered on Celebrity Equinox; a new dining program in the ship’s Eden space; a tech-heavy theater with a curved 4K LED screen; and new options in the ship’s spa. Once on board a Celebrity ship, you'll pay extra for some things — but not as many things as you might think. As part of Celebrity's new Always Included fare structure, you'll get unlimited drinks (cocktails, wines by the glass, beer and sodas), unlimited Wi-Fi and daily gratuities included as part of the base fare. You'll pay extra for some premium drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions and a few other things — unless you've bought a package for some of these items in advance. Most onboard activities such as theater shows are included in the fare. Notably, the top of the glass walls in the infinite veranda cabins slide down at the flick of a switch to create a balcony-like area — an innovation that, until recently, had only been seen with cabins on river cruise ships.

Elite Plus kicks things up by offering additional discounts for onboard services (including a 15% discount on specialty dining cover charges); and free cappuccinos, lattes, espresso and tea throughout your sailing. Celebrity has been rolling out faster Wi-Fi systems with land-like speeds across its fleet in recent years, such that you now can stream video on most ships. The line's new Always Included fare structure has access to a basic internet plan called Surf for no extra charge. It will let you surf the web, send messages and use social media apps (but not stream video). A much faster option called Xcelerate that allows for video streaming and video chats is available for an extra charge.

This digital show follows Top Chef's Isaac Toups as he cruises around the Caribbean on the ship Celebrity Reflection, competing against passengers in a variety of culinary challenges. The ship has its own Michelin-star chef - Cornelius Gallagher, who also makes appearances throughout the series. In summer 2024 (starting in April), for the first time ever, Celebrity ships (Beyond and Reflection, being redeployed from Europe/Mediterranean to the Caribbean) will visit Royal Caribbean's private island CocoCay Bahamas. If a smaller, more intimate ship is more your style, you probably want to take a look at the line's Millennium Class vessels. And if you have any interest in visiting the Galápagos — a once-in-a-lifetime-type destination — it's hard to beat the line's three small Galápagos vessels.

They can watch a glass-blowing demonstration on Equinox, Eclipse, and Solstice, or a meal in the Lawn Club Grill. Celebrity ships also have Cellar Masters, inspired by the Napa Valley vineyards, which brings to life a global wine cruise tour experience, while guests learn about and taste a variety of premium wines from around the world. It offers a new two-story sun deck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that are open exclusively to passengers staying in suites. The newest Celebrity Cruises ship is the line’s third Edge-class ship, Celebrity Beyond. This vessel premiered in April 2022 and offers all of the best of the best that Celebrity Cruises has on tap at the current moment. Expect extra luxury, added Retreat space, more decks, more restaurants, and unique dining options you won’t find on any other ship to date.

These luxury suites are situated over the bridge so you’ll get gorgeous panoramic views. Staterooms on a Celebrity cruise ship evoke a sense of modern luxury. In every stateroom, you’ll find amenities such as a flat-screen TV, exclusive Celebrity eXhale bedding, a cashmere mattress, custom-blended bath products, plush towels, and more.

Celebrity is also known for one of the most innovative new cabin types in the cruise industry, the "infinite veranda" cabin. Found only on Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, these are standard size balcony cabins with outward-facing walls that are almost entirely made of glass. Located at the very top front of the Edge Class vessels, above the bridge (meaning you'll have a better view than the captain in these rooms), the Iconic Suites offer breathtaking views through floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass windows. Master bathrooms are true stunners with massive whirlpool tubs, marble-lined showers and two sink areas.

When packing for a cruise to the Caribbean, you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock. On other Caribbean cruises, you can enter with your U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to the Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate is sufficient.

2024 Celiac Cruise Sailings Gluten Intolerance Group of Northeast Ohio

celiac cruise 2024

Similarly, Celiac Cruise started with the dream of a mom, Maureen Basye, whose son, Peter, was diagnosed with celiac disease, followed by her husband’s diagnosis. Apparently, many Celiac Cruise passengers feel this way. The company has served 5,000 people since its inaugural year in 2020, and 15% of its cruisers are repeat customers. Of course, we enjoyed one last gluttonous meal in Seattle at Ghostfish Brewing Company. We downed a tasty flight of gluten-free beers and stuffed our bellies with oversized beer-battered onion rings. Susan Batterton’s daughter, Janie, has celiac disease, and they sat next to me while dining one night.

While passengers are treated to a magical dedicated gluten-free cruise experience, they may not realize the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure an immersive and safe gluten-free experience. Food & Wine Review: Dedicated Gluten-Free Restaurant in Venice, California

At our Welcome Aboard Lunch, which was a buffet, Miss E (my daughter) asked me how a buffet works. All of her previous buffet experiences had consisted of asking for a chef and waiting a long time for our food to be prepared safely in the back. And because Celiac Cruise trains the entire dining staff to prepare and handle gluten-free food safely, the food service team is ready to serve all guests.

( Fine Dining, It’s Not

By partially chartering a ship, Royal Caribbean required Celiac Cruise to book enough passengers to fill the dining space. In this article, I share 22 things to consider before going on a Celiac Cruise. I pulled from my experiences aboard my Celiac Cruise to Alaska in July 2023.

Download My Safe Dining Card

celiac cruise 2024

While I swore off cruises for the foreseeable future, I could have never predicted that a new company, Celiac Cruise, would come up the ranks that would change my whole take on cruises. On a Celiac Cruise, the entire burden is lifted while on the ship. You’ll have a spot reserved, but can get a lower price if you notice a Royal Caribbean sale.

Two Greek Isles Cruises for 2024 sold out in 21 days, and have a waitlist of 200 people. To be clear, you can eat in these non-dedicated dining rooms, but there is certainly no need to. Nothing trumps a dedicated gluten-free dining room, so we personally opted to skip these non-dedicated dining rooms on the Celaic Cruise, in favor of the ease and safety of the Solarium Bistro. This popular treat always seemed to generate a line next to the pool. It was wonderful for celiac cruisers to have access to gluten-free cones, rather than the usual ice-cream-in-a-cup option. Like many of us, unwillingly thrust into navigating this journey she didn’t ask for nor want, Maureen found the challenges of traveling with celiac disease overwhelming and far from ideal.

This new partnership is designed to address these concerns by creating a supportive, safe environment for those affected by celiac disease to explore the world. Our goal is to provide an incredible, gluten-free cruise vacation experience, while providing an educational, cohesive community of togetherness for our guests. Celiac Cruise offers sailings around the world in partnership with Royal Caribbean International and AMAWaterways. For the safest dining experience, Maureen recommends eating all meals in the dedicated space reserved by Celiac Cruise; however, other venues on the ship also offer gluten-free accommodations. We know traveling safely is a priority for our celiac disease community. To promote gluten-free vacation options, the Celiac Disease Foundation is pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with Celiac Cruise!

We consistently saw fish, steak, chicken, pasta, and vegetarian options at each meal. Some sides were fairly constant, like salads, certain vegetables, and mashed potatoes, while others would pop up once or twice, such as French onion soup or calamari. We were seated by a host(ess), placed our drink and entree orders with the server, and then helped ourselves to salads, sides, and desserts from the buffet. The salad bar and a few daily sandwich options were staples at lunch.

And, of course, I received a lot of special attention, which I didn’t want. I just wanted to enjoy my vacation like everyone else. While it wasn’t my first cruise, it was my first with celiac disease.

This is why training happens again and again, and the ingredients are checked again and again. The training happens before every Celiac Cruise, given that staff can change and people forget from one week to another. Total Travel & Events is a travel agency specializing in group travel, cruises, and all-inclusive resorts and the perfect partner to help Maureen bring her vision to life.

We foster togetherness in the celiac community, making each cruise safe, enjoyable, and gluten-free. Explore confidently with global itineraries, combining adventure and dietary prioritization. Visit to learn more and embark on worry-free adventures with Celiac Cruise. Living with celiac disease poses unique challenges, and individuals affected by this life-changing autoimmune disease find it difficult to enjoy travel without the fear of gluten exposure.
